Lighting can and should be dimmed for a number of different reasons. Ambience is usually the first one that comes to mind. However, dimming lights can also significantly increase lamp life (a 20% dim will quadruple the lamp life) while reducing energy costs. A well-designed lighting control system provides preset dimming levels at the touch of a button, eliminating the need for the user to constantly do it manually.

Any number of dimmed loads can also be included in pre-programmed “scenes.” Lighting scenes can be likened to having a “favorites” button for your lighting levels. Instead of having a switch for each lighting load in the room, one button would bring up a combination of the loads, all preset to a level designed to suit a specific mood, task or activity, such as a “dining” scene, or a “clean up” scene. Pathways of light can be created, so that a single button push at one location can light the way through to another part of the house without touching another switch. Adjustable light levels will enable you to show off your home in ways you may not have imagined.
